The Boston Marathon bombing ranks among the most complex and effective terror attacks ever in the United States, says Bill Braniff, executive director of the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism. (April 17, 2013)
There have been about 2370. Attacks in the United States from 1970. Through. 2012. Of those. You know roughly two dozen part of tax. 300 have been complex attacks attacks that involved more than one phase or more than one explosive in this case 300 that's less than 13%. And about one point 1% of the attacks. Have generated ten or more casualties injuries and Fidelity's. I -- this is. You know one and a hundred in terms of that the number that no level of casualties inflicted on on the Boston area. It's a unique event in fact if you discounted casualties as your metric. This is the fifth largest terrorist attack in the United States -- going back to 1970. This is that this is a complex attack and it's a rare attack in terms of its scale one thing we can. Look at is the fact that this person procured successfully. Fabricated the explosive successfully and then -- -- that successfully and they demonstrated enough patients are operational security. And part of that is the procurement process not procuring material that is going to draw. Attention to yourself not enough numbers -- not quantity. Or a specific type it's gonna draw attention to yourself. So there's some level of operational security mean. Awareness that that was exhibited. Which in demonstrated by the fact that that the attack was successful so crude might might well describe the explosive from explosives point -- -- But the fact it is an entirely different adjective and it could be that this was an effective enough. Technique or tactic to get the job done unfortunately and so. I think that sophisticated. Or crew go to those terms can be a little misleading. Because it's the effects that matter.
