Politicians including Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and German Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen arrived at the Munich Security Conference on Friday (February 17). They were due to take part in a series of panel discussions and bilateral meetings over the three-day event being held in the luxurious Bayerischer Hof hotel in the city centre. Von der Leyen was scheduled to speak at the opening session with U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis later on Friday. Security was tight around the hotel, with a high police presence. U.S. Vice President Mike Pence was due to arrive on Friday evening before giving a speech on Saturday (February 18) aimed at reassuring European allies about America's commitment to Europe. It will be the first major foreign address for the Trump administration.
