An automated smart bicycle lock detects when the owner has left their bike and locks its front wheel. An alarm is activated and the owner alerted via their smart phone if any would-be thief tries to tamper with it. Matthew Stock reports.
Bolting your bike to a railing or lamp-post could soon be a thing of the past, thanks to the Bisecu smart bike lock. Engineers from South Korea say the cylindrical device takes the hassle out of safeguarding your ride. SOUNDBITE (English) SIRI SUNG, DIRECTOR OF MARKETING AT BISECU, SAYING: "Bisecu smart bike lock stays on the front wheel and connects to your phone via Bluetooth. So if I lock the bike then the front wheel is fixed and there are sensors in the lock that go off if someone tries to tamper with the bike." When synced to a smart phone, it automatically unlocks when the owner approaches the bike. When riders dismount and walk away, a novel locking mechanism freezes the front wheel. A 100 decibel alarm sounds if any would-be thief attempts to tamper with the bike, while the owner is alerted on their phone. SOUNDBITE (English) SIRI SUNG, DIRECTOR OF MARKETING AT BISECU, SAYING: "First there's Bluetooth connectivity with your phone, it also has a military-grade encryption so that it can't be hacked. In terms of the locking mechanism, it is patent-pending, but it's similar to how a door is locked." The makers say it's one of the lightest bike locks to date, weighing just 350 grams. They believe it's also the most secure. SOUNDBITE (English) SIRI SUNG, DIRECTOR OF MARKETING AT BISECU, SAYING: "It's also the only bike lock that can't be cut. So most locks, the lock is cut and the (bike) ridden off. This has been designed purposely in the shape of a cylinder so it can't be cut, the locking mechanism is hidden so it's harder to break in to." Inside, sensors include an accelerometer and gyroscope. Once the user starts riding, Bisecu transitions into a cycling computer providing real-time data including distance travelled, speed, and calories burnt. Bisecu was previewed recently at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. It will launch on Kickstarter later this year - hopefully setting the wheels in motion to ship by the end of 2017.
