British web design start-up MBJ says it sped up its expansion to Germany after the Brexit vote and the ''uncertainties it brought'' and that Berlin has potential to snatch away the title of ''start-up capital'' from London. But as Laura Frykberg reports, some other expats in Berlin feel less secure about the outlook as Britain begins its divorce from the EU.
On a sunny day in Berlin... It's easy to see why many Brits now call the city home. But Brexit could mean they can't stay here.. (SOUNDBITE) (English) MHLANGULI NCUBE 32-YEAR-OLD BRITISH-ZIMBABWEAN, LIVING IN BERLIN FOR THREE YEARS, WORKING AT UK TECH START-UP IN BERLIN, SAYING: "I am opening myself up to a marriage. If you know anyone who would like to get married to a gentleman with an afro in exchange for some type of passport." Mhlanguli Ncube works for a tech start up Which employs 65 percent of its staff from the UK. Others - like British web design start-up MBJ - have also come. It's relocated to Berlin ahead of Brexit. Saying London may lose its reputation for fostering creative business. (SOUNDBITE) (English) MBJ CO-FOUNDER, JULIAN BALADURAGE, SAYING: "If Berlin plays its cards right in the next five years Berlin could be that start-up capital. You have the talent here, you have the companies and I would say right now, after Brexit, a bit more stability in Berlin than in the UK." That - and access to other markets next door in Austria and Switzerland. (SOUNDBITE) (English) MBJ CO-FOUNDER, TONI HORN, SAYING: "I think MBJ wasn't really affected by the Brexit yet. But definitely, some of the decisions we took were influenced by it. So for example, we wanted to expand in the German-speaking region, the DACH (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) region, but I think one of the reasons why we did it a bit quicker than initially planned was because of the uncertainty the Brexit obviously brought." Brexit negotiators say the rights of such workers And vice versa for Europeans in Britain...is the first point of business. But neither the UK government nor Europe has set in stone any guarantees. Some of these wondering whether these may be their last years in Berlin.
