Police say a former employee of a New York City hospital opened fire with an assault rifle inside the building, killing one doctor and wounding six other people before killing himself. Jillian Kitchener reports.
A burst of violence inside a New York City hospital. ...A former employee -- wearing a white lab coat -- opening fire with an assault rifle, according to officials. They say he killed one doctor inside the Bronx-Lebanon Hospital, and wounded at least six other people before fatally shooting himself. Five are said to be in serious condition. New York police commissioner James O'Neill says the gunman stalked the 16th and 17th floors. (SOUNDBITE) POLICE COMMISSIONER, JAMES O'NEILL, SAYING: "During the incident, the hospital's fire alarm system activated, apparently due to the suspect's attempt to set himself on fire. On the 17th floor, officers encountered the male suspect lying on the floor dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound." Mayor Bill de Blasio said the shooting appeared to be "workplace-related". ...In a hospital, where witnesses say panic broke out... (SOUNDBITE) WITNESS GONZALO CARAZO, SAYING: "Next thing I know, I saw one of the doctors with a gunshot wound to his hand, and a hundred police officers outside." Authorities did not immediately identify the gunman or any of his victims.
