Marriott partners with Chinese e-commerce giant to tap into the growing number of Chinese consumers traveling abroad. Fred Katayama reports.
Marriott is teaming up with Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba to tap into the growing number of Chinese travelers. They can now book rooms via Alibaba's travel service Fliggy and pay using its online platform, Alipay. Skift's hospitality editor Deanna Ting says Marriott is aiming big: (SOUNDBITE) DEANNA TING, HOSPITALITY EDITOR, SKIFT (ENGLISH) SAYING: "Within the next five years, the Chinese president estimates, Chinese nationals will be making more than 700 million visits overseas. Last year, they made a 135 million trips, and they spent $261 billion around the world, and, by partnering with Alibaba, Marriott is reaching out for a big part of that market. Alibaba alone has about 500 million active monthly users, which is actually much more than the entire population of the U.S." Ting also says the Chinese travel market is not only huge, but also very different. Chinese consumers are very tech savvy, and they do a lot of their bookings via the internet. By partnering with Marriott, Alibaba also expands its offering globally.
