Rupert Murdoch has pulled his Fox News channel from the Sky platform in Britain, where the government is assessing a bid by the media mogul to buy the broader Sky pay-TV company for $15 billion. Laura Frykberg reports.
It's not often a media mogul... Will switch off their own channel. But that's exactly what Rupert Murdoch has done.. Ending Fox News on the Sky platform in Britain. Citing the fact that only a few thousand UK viewers watch it. SOUNDBITE (English) IG SENIOR ANALYST, CHRIS BEAUCHAMP, SAYING: "The figures are very small. It is very easy for the Murdoch empire to cut it off and accept the small hit that goes with it." Some say the news has an agenda though... The UK government is currently assessing a bid by the Murdoch's Twenty-First Century Fox to buy Sky pay-TV for $15 billion. SOUNDBITE (English) IG SENIOR ANALYST, CHRIS BEAUCHAMP, SAYING: "It's clearly a sacrificial lamb here, when I heard the news report yesterday, the first thought was yes that's just a way to appease the regulator.." The government says it has no problem with Twenty-First Century Fox's commitment to broadcasting standards.. It is - however - concerned the deal will give Murdoch too much influence over UK news. SOUNDBITE (English) IG SENIOR ANALYST, CHRIS BEAUCHAMP, SAYING: "It's still likely to go through, but the government is going to make this one a bit tougher than many people thought they would." The Fox News channel ended on the Sky platform on Tuesday... Sky shares closed down 0.5 percent immediately after... While Fox's were up 1 percent.
