An Iowa mom is charged with child endangerment after police say she left her four young kids home alone to go on a 10-day vacation to Germany. Linda So reports.
30-year-old Erin Macke makes her first court appearance after being arrested for leaving her four young kids home alone. Her reason? She was on a 10-day European vacation. SOUNDBITE: Lt. Tyler Tompkins, Johnston Police Department, SAYING: "ALL OF HER SITTER OPTIONS FELL THROUGH AND SHE LEFT THE KIDS IN THE CARE OF THE TWO 12-YEAR-OLDS." Police discovered the four children inside their Johnston, Iowa apartment after receiving a tip from the father of one of them. Home alone were a 6-year-old, a 7-year-old, and 12-year-old twins. Authorities say the mother had left the country a day earlier and wasn't planning on returning until October 1st. SOUNDBITE: Lt. Tyler Tompkins, Johnston Police Department, SAYING: "WE CALLED HER, SHE ANSWERED THE PHONE, HAD A CONVERSATION WITH OUR OFFICER, DID NOT SEE IT BEING A PROBLEM." Macke eventually returned to the U.S. 6 days later. Her children were handed over to the state's Department of Human Services before being placed with relatives. SOUNDBITE: Lt. Tyler Tompkins, Johnston Police Department, SAYING: "WE HAVE SITUATIONS WHERE PARENTS GO NEXT DOOR, OR PARENTS MAY GO OUT FOR THE NIGHT, AND WHILE THAT'S NOT ADVISABLE EITHER DEPENDING ON THE AGE OF THE CHILDREN, OBVIOUSLY LEAVING THE COUNTRY IS A TOTALLY DIFFERENT SITUATION." Macke faces multiple charges including child endangerment and is being held at the county jail. She's been ordered not to have contact with her children.
